For the first time in over ten years, Stanford's Men's Gymnastics is ranked second in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll. The Cardinal men placed third at the 2006 NCAA Championships and will look to improve upon that finish with an experienced and deeply talented squad in 2007.
"It is always difficult to estimate where each team will rank," said head coach Thom Glielmi. "Additionally, there are always some unknowns that sprout up, such as freshmen adjustments and gymnasts coming off or going on injury lists. However, every team faces these same issues. We will do all we can to better our ranking at the Championships."
The Cardinal returns all but two gymnasts from last year's squad. The team earned the most All-America honors in school history last season, garnering 11 honors at last season's NCAA Championships. This year's team will be led by four-time NCAA All-American and 2006 World Championship Team member David Sender. Helping him lead the team will be co-captain and 2006 NCAA horizontal bar champion Dylan Carney. Peter Derman, Alex Schorsch, and Sho Nakamori are also returning All-Americans that Glielmi will look upon to help led this year's squad.
"This is a solid group of individuals with a common goal," said Glielmi, "And their experience helps the entire team."
