Newport, RI- Just two days after the women's nationals ended in Newport, RI, the Stanford sailing team took to the waters again to compete in the Team Racing National Championships. Fourteen teams qualified from around the country for this best of the best meeting. The first day saw racing in two brackets, seven and seven as seeded from conference qualifiers. The Cardinal drew the bracket to begin in the afternoon. Sailing a full round robin of six races, the team only lost one.
Sailing for the Cardinal were skippers Edward Conrad '08, TJ Tullo '09, Cole Hatton '11, and Evan Brown '08 with crews Carrie Denning '08, Taylor Grimes '09, Leigh Hammel '10, Hannah Burroughs '11, Graham Todd '11, Kelly McKenna '09, and Evan Brown. With only six sailors in any given race at one time, the Cardinal put forth a true team effort taking advantage of all possible combinations. The second day of the championship began with the Cardinal in a six-way tie for first with a record of 2-1 after three races in the top round of eight having been completed in the initial round. The Cardinal ran into some difficulties on a foggy day two as they lost their four races to finish the first round of eight.
The final day of racing gave the Cardinal team a chance at redemption. Racing was delayed in the morning due to fog, but shortly enough things got underway in a building sea breeze. By the end of the day, the Cardinal got to show their strength in big breeze. By winning the final two races of the day against strong St. Mary's and Brown teams, the Cardinal got to end on a high note. Qualifying for the final four was regatta winner Boston College, runner-up Georgetown University, third place College of Charleston and Brown University.
While the Cardinal coed sailors did not achieve the result they had hoped for, it was a respectable finish nonetheless. The team's ability to maintain their composure and win races at the end of the day was indicative of the never say die attitude that got the women's team from ninth after the first day of women's nationals into fourth place at the end. Coed nationals, the final of the three consecutive championships, are to be competed Monday, June 2 through Wednesday, June 4.
