Stanford, Calif. - Stanford midfielder Liz Piselli has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office yesterday. The junior has started all four games this season and currently leads the Cardinal with ten goals on the year. She has also contributed three assists, won eight draw controls and collected eight ground balls while boasting a .500 shot percentage.
This weekend, Piselli led the Cardinal in a pair of impressive outings, registering two hat tricks in two matches. Against Ohio State, Piselli's three goals powered the Cardinal to a 17-9 blowout of the Buckeyes. Her first goal of the match, on an assist from Megan Burker, gave the Cardinal a commanding 10-4 halftime lead. Piselli also scored two second half goals to secure the Stanford victory.
Against Notre Dame, Piselli netted a pass from Bryanne Gilkinson with 6:42 left in the first half to start a four-goal Stanford scoring run that would launch the Cardinal into halftime with a solid 5-1 lead over the No. 17 Irish. Her second goal came in the middle of the second half to give the Cardinal a commanding 9-4 advantage. Piselli came through for the Cardinal in the first overtime period, as well, netting a goal less than a minute in to give Stanford the late lead.
The honor is the first of Piselli's Cardinal career, and the first for a Stanford player this season. Last year, goalkeeper Laura Shane received the honor on April 12, while Sarah Bach was recognized twice, on February 21 and April 19.
The Cardinal returns to the field Friday night to face conference opponent UC Davis in a 7 p.m. match-up. On Sunday afternoon, the squad will seek to avenge last week's double-overtime loss to No. 17 Notre Dame with a win over No. 13 Vanderbilt.
