The Stanford Women's Gymnastics (SWG) team showed their support for the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI) and their Go Girl Go program by participating in the San Jose 5K run last weekend.

The run was part of a long-term volunteer effort by the gymnastics team to help the community and young girls by exposing them to the benefits of exercise. SWG has been volunteering 2 hours per week to help out with BAWSI's Go Girl Go program. The team works with the girls at the Belle Haven Elementary School in East Menlo Park every Tuesday teaching them a variety of sports and serving as mentors and role models. The Go Girl Go program emphasizes physical fitness, health and improving self-esteem in young girls. It has given the team a chance to make a difference in the lives of girls, and children in under served communities.

The BAWSI program is a public benefit, nonprofit corporation with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health, hope and wholeness to our community. It was founded in 2005 by World Cup Soccer stars Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy along with former San Jose CyberRays general manager Marlene Bjornsrud.
