Pacific Palisades, Calif. - The 2005-06 tennis season has begun, as Stanford newcomers Celia Durkin and Jessica Nguyen competed at the ITA All-American Championship Qualifier at the Riviera Tennis Club. The main draw of the ITA All-American Championship begins tomorrow morning. Stanford's returning All-Americans, senior Alice Barnes and juniors Anne Yelsey and Theresa Logar will compete in singles. Barnes and Yelsey will also team up in doubles.
In singles, Durkin, a sophomore who is in her first season after transferring from Harvard, lost a pair of decisions this week, after facing fifth-seeded Diana Srebovic fo Florida in the first round.
In doubles, Durkin and Nguyem posted an 8-3 first-round win over Texas Tech's Tara Browning and Lakann Wagley, before falling to third-seeded Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen of North Carolina.
Tomorrow, singles action is slated to begin with Yelsey facing top-seeded Jennifer Magley of Florida, eighth-seeded Barnesr taking on Northwestern's Cristelle Grier and Logar challenging sixth-seeded Shadisha Robinson from Georgia. In doubles, Barnes and Yelsey are set to challenge Kentucky duo Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk.
