STANFORD, Calif.- Redshirt senior Sho Nakamori was honored as the Al Masters Award winner at the annual Stanford Athletic Board Awards Luncheon, highlighting Stanford's athletic success during the 2008-09 campaign.
A key contributor to Stanford's national championship run in men's gymnastics, Nakamori captured the prestigious honor, which is presented to the student-athlete attaining the highest standards of athletic performance, leadership and academic achievement.
Four student-athletes were awarded Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships: Nate Cass (men's swimming and diving), Alicia Follmar (women's cross country/track and field), Nicole Ourada (women's gymnastics) and Brandon Williams (men's volleyball).
Joanna Tu (women's rowing) was honored as a newly-elected member of Phi Beta Kappa while Alex Pintchouk (women's gymnastics) and Galen Thompson (men's soccer) received Summer Institute for General Management Scholarships.

THOMAS W. FORD AWARD
Presented to the team whose student-athletes have demonstrated a special commitment to participation in local community outreach programs.
In 2008-09, the Stanford lacrosse program was extremely active in the community. The team played an active role as volunteers for the 2nd Mile Program, helping to refurbish an elementary school in East Palo Alto. The squad was also heavily involved with the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI), attending Selby Lane elementary school during the fall quarter and introducing physical fitness to young students. In fact, the lacrosse team was honored for its efforts by BAWSI at a recent Redwood City School Board meeting. During the spring quarter, the players also participated in Friends of Jaclyn, an organization that supports young children with brain tumors. The team adopted a young girl with a pediatric brain tumor and welcomed her as a part of the team, interacted with her through various activities and celebrated her 13th birthday. The lacrosse program volunteered at two different youth clinics, helping promote the sport in the Bay Area.

Presented to the club sports team that achieves excellence, demonstrates outstanding leadership, exemplifies fair play/sportsmanship and is committed to community service.
Finished second in 2009 USA Rugby Division I Women's Nationals ... produced two first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and had six players selected to the first-ever Collegiate Women's All-American All-Star Team that participated in the Senior All-Star National Championships ... produced a member of the USA 7's World Cup Team, which finished third at the 7's World Cup ... three players were selected to the USA U20 National squad with one player being invited to the U20 World Nations Cup ... committed to performing community service projects such as packaging 11,000 boxes of nearly 33,000 pounds of food for a local food bank serving senior citizens and working with Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI) to promote fit and healthy lifestyles for young girls in Redwood City and East Palo Alto.
Administered by the Director of Sports Performance, this award honors the student-athlete who not only displays maximum effort on and off the field of competition, but also brings out the best in his/her teammates through positive attitude, relentless work ethic and consistent commitment to performance enhancement. The award is given in memory of Arthur F. Dauer '59.
BASKETBALL - COMMUNICATION MAJOR
Started 32 games, averaging 12.6 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game ... racked up a team-best 42 steals and finished third on the team with 66 assists ... scored in double-figures 24 times ... scored a career-best 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds against Washington (2/8) ... against Washington (3/12), registered his fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and a career-best 15 rebounds.

BASKETBALL - STANFORD vs. IOWA STATE - MARCH 30, 2009
Appel poured in a school-record 46 points in the third-highest scoring performance in NCAA Tournament history, securing Stanford's second straight Final Four appearance with a 74-53 victory over Iowa State in the Berkeley Regional. Appel, who made 19 of her 28 shot attempts while also grabbing 16 rebounds, broke Candice Wiggins' single-game school scoring record with her final basket of the game. Appel actually outscored Iowa State in the first half, totaling 27 points to the Cyclones' 25. Only Drake's Lorri Bauman (50 points in 1982) and Texas Tech's Sheryl Swoopes (47 points in 1993) have scored more points in an NCAA Tournament game than Appel.
