Oct. 28, 2008

This year's PCCSC Men's Singlehanded Champion T.J. Tullo '09 and PCCSC Women's Singlehanded Champion Taylor Grimes `09, along with fellow Stanford sailor Carolyn Prioleau `12, traveled with Stanford's head coach John Vandemoer to the ICSA Men's and Women's Singlehanded Nationals held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Battling sickness, foul weather, and jet lag, the team came away with respectable finishes in these highly competitive championships. Sailing full rig Lasers in the men's nationals, T.J. finished 11th overall out of 18 sailors that all qualified in their respective district championships. In the women's championship, Carolyn and Grimes finished 14th and 15th in a field of 18 of the nation's best female collegiate Laser Radial sailors.

"What separated me from the guys in the top five was focus," said T.J. "While fitness didn't hold me back, mentally it might have taken me longer to get into the groove." Coach Vandemoer agreed that T.J. was able to meet the demanding physical requirements of the Laser, but that the top of the fleet were more consistent tactically. T.J. concluded, "I had the boat speed upwind...but my tactics weren't there mentally. T.J. and the Stanford squad will have to head back to the drawing board to make adjustments as they look forward to the North-South PCCSC Fall Championships, which is perhaps the most important fall regatta, since it determines priority for choosing spring regattas.

Sailing at the Cornell sailing site is on the southern end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes scattered throughout upstate New York. Cold weather in the upper 40s brought a stiff 18-20 knot, southerly wind that did not treat the jet-lagged Stanford squad to a warm welcome on Friday, the first day of competition. Saturday brought rain, more cold weather, but a calmer breeze of 10-12 knots. By the end of the day, the drenched lady-sailors began their seventh and final race of the long day in a dying breeze, which eventually caused the race's abandonment. Sunday finally brought a dramatic change with warmer weather in the high 50s and a clear sky. This allowed the race committee to finish all racing in both the men's and women's championships by 2:00 p.m.

The Stanford Cardinal wish to congratulate Women's Singlehanded National Champion Anne Haeger of Boston College and Men's Singlehanded National Champion Cy Thompson of Roger Williams University.

Up next in Stanford sailing action is the PCCSC Sloop Championships held this year in Shields at UC Irvine next weekend, November 1-2. Check back next week for results and details.
