STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's lacrosse was honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association as an academic merit squad. The Cardinal were one of three Division I teams honored for its excellence in the classroom.
The IWLCA has recognized nine schools as earning Merit Squad status for the 2011 season, with three schools honored in each division. Institutions were named Merit Squads by virtue of having one of the top three team GPAs for the season. In addition, all teams that posted team GPAs of 3.0 or higher were recognized earlier this year as Academic Squads.
The Cardinal had the second highest team GPA in Division I with a 3.485. The Cardinal was the only Merit Squad to play in the NCAA tournament and trailed American by only 0.008 for the top mark in D-I.
As a part of its high team GPA, Stanford had seven honored as IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Maggie Sachs, Sarah Flynn, Catherine Swanson, Ashley Aruffo, Leslie Foard, Karen Nesbitt and Annie Read were each honored for their efforts in the classroom.
The Cardinal will begin its fall season on Friday, Sept. 30, when it hosts California a the Stanford Practice Turf at 5:30 p.m.
