Synchronized Swimming Off To Fast Start At United States Collegiate Championships

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Stanford University synchronized swimming advanced all five of its entrants into event finals on day one of the United States Collegiate Championships at the Midtown Aquatic Center.

The opening day of the three-day competition consisted of the event semifinals in the solo, duet and trio competitions. The top eight competitors in each event advanced to Sunday's finals, and none of Stanford's entrants finished lower than third.

Stanford finished 2-3 in both the duet and trio semifinals. In the duet, Erin Dobratz and Katie Norris finished second at 94.400, while Stephanie Joukoff and Lindsey Wigginton were third at 92.533. The Cardinal's team of Dobratz, Norris and Wigginton was second in the trio semis at 94.333, with Ekaterina Androchina, Shannon Montague and Joukoff placed third at 93.067. In the solo competition, defending national champion Montague was second at 94.400.

Competition continues Friday with figures in the morning, and team semifinals at 2:30 p.m. (PT). Finals in all events begin Saturday at 7:00 a.m. (PT). Stanford, which won national titles in 1998 and '99, is looking to dethrone 2000 champion Ohio State in the team competition. The championships are an open-class meet featuring 200 competitors from 21 universities from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, and the NAIA.
