STANFORD, Calif. - Hey SWG fans,
After our first home meet, SWG was pumped and ready to take on the Utes at the University of Utah. We had a short week of practice, with only one team practice on Wednesday before we took off for Utah. It was an interesting workout though, as the coaches tried to prepare us for the altitude we would experience at the competition. They made us run around Burnham Pavilion singing at the top of our lungs before doing our bar routines.
On Thursday, we left for Utah. We definitely were not prepared for the weather, as most of us only brought jackets from our warmup sweats, and it was definitely in the 30˚F range (that's around -1˚C for the foreigners).
On Friday, we went shopping in the morning since the meet wasn't until later that night. Everybody had fun, buying merchandise from clothes at American Eagle to teddy bears at Build-a-Bear. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel to prepare for the meet.
We started on bars with six solid bar sets. That fueled us for vault where we started and ended strong. Both Shelley Alexander and Alyssa Brown completed amazing vaults, scoring season bests and fueling us for the next event. On floor, we had so much fun performing for the crowd and judges. As usual Ashley Morgan lit up the arena with her floor routine and tumbling, giving us the confidence we needed as we headed to beam. After the third rotation we were tied with Utah, and they were ending on floor. Beam started out strong with Alyssa Brown and Allyse Ishino, executing rock solid routines. However, with a fall halfway through the lineup, there was no room for error for the next three competitors. The last routines were filled with suspense, some nerves, but most of all, confidence.
Before mounting the beam the rest of the team knew each person was going to hit from the look they had on their face and the aggressiveness they possessed from the very beginning of their routine. The last three performers nailed their routines, ultimately allowing Stanford to finish with an overall team score three tenths above Utah.
On Saturday morning (approximately 4 hours after we had gone to bed), we woke up to fly back to California. Sunday we had practice, which was both productive and exciting. Shona Morgan and Kristina Vaculik did full floor routines to prepare for the meet next weekend at home. Nicole Pechanec and Shona also showed rock solid beam routines, and Ashley Morgan prepared to complete her new dismount off bars this coming weekend. Stay tuned for the next Inside the Locker Room, or better yet, come to the meet this Saturday, February 5th at 4:00 pm in Burnham Pavilion. Also, if you're on campus, watch out for the freshman in White Plaza Friday afternoon advertising our meet.
