Sept. 10, 2008

Stanford, Calif.- Stanford Athletics is proud to welcome John Vandemoer as head coach of the Stanford Sailing Team. Vandemoer has been head coach of the Navy Sailing Team for the past two years. Beyond his work at Navy, John has a long and successful history in the realm of coaching sailing. He brings a great amount of energy to the position, and he will surely thrive on the winning culture, substantial resources and talented student-athletes here at Stanford.

Growing up in Hyannis, MA, a small town on Cape Cod, Vandemoer began racing sailboats on Nantucket Sound at a young age. His interest and experience in college-style racing began at St. George's School in Newport, RI where he earned All New England status in the very competitive New England Scholastic Sailing Association. From there, he went on to Hobart College in Geneva, NY. At Hobart, John competed on a top ranked varsity team for four years, placing top three at the ICSA Nationals. After graduating, he immediately pursued his interest in coaching and took the job of director of the sailing program and head coach at Chicago Yacht Club. The young sailors who developed under John's tutelage achieved great success early on, winning two Women's Doublehanded National Championships. Many of those sailors also went on to competitive sailing colleges across the country and became All Americans and National Champions.

John's introduction to college sailing coaching came at the perpetually top 10 ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland. Vandemoer spent two years at St. Mary's as assistant coach, coaching nine All Americans and placing third at the Women's National Championships. On the fast track in terms of coaching experience, John moved into the head coach position at Navy. Inheriting a team in need of rebuilding, he guided that program to strong results. The Navy Sailing Team qualified for four of six possible nationals in each of the two years he was there.

The Stanford Athletics community looks forward to working with John at the opening of the fall season in September. Not only does the team welcome a new coach to the staff; a new fleet of boats will arrive for the start of preseason. That new fleet will host both the Women's and Coed Dinghy National Championships in the spring of 2009. Coach Vandemoer's experience in running the spring Nationals in his first year at Navy as well as the High School Nationals in his second year will surely prove invaluable to Stanford's joint venture with St. Francis Yacht Club.
