Release: 06/21/1999

January 28, 1999

Briefly: The Stanford women's gymnastics team (2-1) defeated California, 193.775-188.350, on Friday, January 22. Up next, the Cardinal, ranked 10th in the national preseason poll, has its home opener when it faces Oregon State, this Friday, January 29th. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm in Burnham Pavilion.

Last Week: Stanford went on the road for the third consecutive weekend and trounced Bay Area rival, California on Friday, January 22. The Cardinal led from the start, taking a 0.825 lead after the first rotation, and eventually posted the high score on all four events. Sophomore Jen Exaltacion and junior Larissa Fontaine led the way for the Cardinal by winning two events each. A 1996 Canadian Olympian, Exaltacion finshed first in the uneven parallel bars (9.800) and balance beam (9.875). Meanwhile, Fontaine grabbed titles in the vault (9.925) and floor exercise (9.750), while scoring no lower than 9.725 on the three events she participated in. Also having an impressive evening was freshman Katy Hebert. One of Stanford's top all-around performers, Hebert scored season-highs in the uneven parallel bars (9.675) and balance beam (9.825) on the way to having the best all-around score (38.500) of the meet. Overall, Stanford had six different gymnasts who finished either first or second in one of the events.

Fabulous Fontaine: Coming off a year when she was the NCAA Champion in the vault, Larissa Fontaine has been looked upon to be one of the top preformers on this year's team. Without a doubt, she has let nobody down. Through three meets, Fontaine has alredy placed first in four of the nine events she has participated in. In Friday's victory over Cal, she won two events (vault and floor exercise), recorded seson highs in all three of her events and registered the fifth highest vault score (9.925) in school history. Additionaly, Fontaine also has Stanford's season-high in the all-around, scoring a 38.625 in the meet at Utah (Jan. 15).

Excellent Exaltacion: Another Stanford gymnast who has significantly contributed to the team is Jennifer Exaltacion. In the 11 events she has participated in, Exaltacion has won three. Thus far, Exaltacion has Stanford season-highs in the uneven parallel bars (9.800) and the balance beam (9.875). In fact, her 9.875 in the beam against California was Stanford's highest score on that event since the 1997 season.

Scouting the Beavers: Oregon State enters Friday night's competition with a 1-2 record after defeating Boise State on Sunday, January 24. In the victory over the Broncos, senior Megan Murphy-Bancroft paced the Beavers by winning the all-around (38.875) and the balance beam (9.925). OSU returns eight letter-winners from last year's squad that went 11-4 and finished fifth at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The Beavers are led by Murphy-Bancroft, a 1999 All-American candidate. As a junior last season, she was named All-Pac-10 in both the all-around and balance beam. During last year, Oregon State beat Stanford 194.875-193.525 in the teams' only matchup. In that meet, Murphy-Bancroft finished first in both the all-around (39.075) and balance beam (9.900) on the way to the victory for the Beavers. Head Coach Tanya Chaplin is in her second year at the helm for the Beavers and has a coaching record of 12-6.

Head Coach Mark Cook: At the helm of the Cardinal program is second-year head coach Mark Cook. In just one season on The Farm, Cook has transformed Stanford into one of the best gymnastics programs in the country. Last season, he led the Cardinal to the Pac-10 Title and an individual NCAA Title, both first-time accomplishments for the program. Previously one of the top assistant coaches in the nation, Cook came to Stanford from rival UCLA where he helped build the Bruins into a national championship team. During his three-year stint in Westwood, the Bruins improved each year. After finishing fourth at nationals his first year (1995), UCLA placed second in 1996, and in 1997 he helped direct the Bruins to their first-ever NCAA tilte. The 1996 West Region Assistant Coach-of-the-Year, Cook also helped lead the team to three consecutive West Region titles and two Pac-10 Conference championships. While at UCLA, Cook's duties included scouting, recruiting, strength development, training athletes and promoting gymnastics.
