Charleston, SC - This last weekend the Cardinal sailors travelled to Charleston, South Carolina for a team race regatta hosted by the College of Charleston. The event included some of the best teams in the nation, among them defending national champion Georgetown and top 10 powerhouses Harvard, Dartmouth, St. Mary's and Old Dominion.
In the first round-robin, the Cardinal struggled on the starting line and as a result finished with a record of one win and six losses. The team rebounded, however, in the second round, adjusting their strategy and finishing with four wins and three losses. The overall record of 5-9 was not good enough to qualify the Cardinal for the "Final Four" but in the consolation round the team finished 2-1, with wins over Dartmouth and Eckerd.
In the end, the Cardinal finished 7th overall, one win shy of winning a tiebreaker for 5th. Cardinal skippers David Kenny, Ted Conrads, Peter Deming, and Dave Phillips, along with crews Lucy Flood, Jessica Gray, and Jessie Duncan all participated in the event. They look to improve upon their finish this weekend at the McIntyre Team Race, to be hosted by Stanford at the sailing facility in Redwood Shores.
