Treasure Island, CA - Proving that for sailing, like football, rankings don't matter till the end of the season, the 18th-ranked Stanford Cardinal Coed Sailors won this weekend's Stony Burke Regatta at Cal by 34 points. Seniors Edward Conrad and Carrie Denning sailed A-Division while sophomore Peter Stemler and freshmen Hannah Burroughs competed in B-Division. Both duos won their divisions, helping the Cardinal take top honors by an astounding 34 points over rival and 14th-ranked USC.

With the background of Fleet Week and the buzz of the Blue Angels flying overhead, the Cardinal assumed the position of top team on the West Coast. During the two day, 18-race event "Both teams sailed really well, keeping focus with Jets doing cartwheels overhead is pretty tough" commented Coach Kehoe. "It's always fun when you sail well, and these teams sailed very well in tricky conditions."

Competing against the coed teams, the 2nd-ranked Stanford Women finished the regatta 6th overall. Both `06-'07 All-Americans, senior Evan Brown and junior Kelly McKenna sailed A, while sophomore Leigh Hammel and senior Sarah Schokenecht sailed B-Division. Kehoe commented, "I'm proud of the women's finish, considering they sailed lighter than all the other teams on Saturday." He continued " they really worked the fleet, making for good practice next weekend's trip to the East Coast."

Next weekend the Cardinal sailors will compete in the Pac Coast Men's & Women's Singlehanded Champs, to be hosted by Stanford. They will also host the Annual Drew Gashler Memorial Alumni & Friends Regatta.
