Stanford, CA - The Cardinal women's lacrosse team got their second loss of the season today at Stanford Stadium, a 20-6 decision versus the Cornell Big Red. Stanford got on the board first with a goal by freshman Nina Pantano at 2:30 into the game, but the Big Red came back to score the next four goals and quickly took control.
The Cardinal would score another three goals to round out the half, but they entered the break down 11-4 and Cornell remained strong throughout the match. To start the second half freshman Amanda Pettit posted a goal at 31:30 to bring Stanford six goals, but they would not score again until the final two minutes. At 58:10 freshman Claire Calzonetti scored the final Cardinal goal to finish the game.
Pantano led the team with two goals and freshman Kelsey Twist recorded one goal and one assist. This game also marked the first collegiate appearance for backup goalkeeper Christina Saikus. She came in with 16 minutes left in the game and notched four saves to replace starting keeper Virginia Solomon, who finished with six saves. This loss puts the team even at 2-2 overall and they remain undefeated in league play.
Continuing a four-game home-stand the Cardinal will take on the St. Mary's Gaels on Tuesday, March 5 at 7pm at Stanford Stadium. Stanford faced the Gaels earlier this season and handed them a 12-8 loss at St. Mary's Stadium, this was the Cardinal's 13th consecutive league victory, stretching from the 1999-2000 season.
