Get an inside look at the Stanford women's volleyball team each week. In this edition, junior Rachel Williams talks about the team's trip to Hawaii and travel to Penn State.
Hey Stanford family, friends and fans!
Our first three weeks of preseason have been very exciting! The new freshmen are getting along great and learning quick, making their transition to college volleyball an easy one.
While the purpose of the Hawaii Tournament was strictly business, the team was able to squeeze in a day of sun, sand, and snorkeling at the Outrigger Canoe Club in Waikiki before we left. Men's volleyball alumni Brad Lawson and Spencer McLachlin's parents joined us at the Outrigger, and showed us the ropes on how to canoe and paddle board. Everyone caught on pretty quickly, and our success has led to talks of starting the Stanford women's paddleboard team! After our fun at the Outrigger, we were able to get lunch in downtown Waikiki and hang out at the hotel before we went to the airport for our NINE hour redeye to Washington D.C.
The Outrigger let us relax and enjoy Hawaii for a bit, but as soon as we left Hawaii our minds eagerly switched to focusing on the Nike Big Four Classic. We realized how spoiled we were on our flight to Hawaii from San Francisco (almost everyone had their own row, or shared a row with just one other teammate), as the redeye was a completely full flight. Lucky for us, there were a lot of adorable and talkative toddlers that gave us some attention and put smiles on our faces before we took off. Once we landed in D.C. we got directly on our next flight to State College, which, fortunately for our very confused body-clocks, was under an hour.
When our bus pulled up to take us to the hotel, we found out that we have Richard as our bus driver for the week, who also was the Stanford women's soccer team's bus driver when they were here last week! After we settled into our new rooms, did some stretching and recovery with Taylor, our sports performance coach, and treatment with Nina, our athletic trainer, we geared up for practice at Penn State. Even though we were tired, everyone seemed anxious to get back in the gym! Our first practice went well; we worked hard, sweated a lot, and focused on getting better and paying attention to detail. After practice we went back to the hotel, had dinner, and pretty much went straight to sleep... we all had to get used to the six hour time difference from Hawaii!
As I type this, we are all on the bus headed to Gettysburg! Unfortunately, we were all too tired last night to watch Remember the Titans (a team favorite) before our trip. Though, I am still hoping Denzel Washington will be waiting for us just under the trees by the battlefield. After Gettysburg, at which I am sure we will take a ridiculous amount of pictures like we usually do, we will practice again tomorrow and get ready to play Penn State on Friday night and Florida on Saturday. We can't wait!
Thanks for all of your support and we hope to see you at our home-opener next Wednesday night!
