STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford University's Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football/Head Coach David Shaw announced today that 19 high school seniors have signed official letters of intent to play football at Stanford University next fall.

The 19 student-athletes attend high school in 12 states--California (5), Georgia (3), Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington, while one attends high school in Washington D.C.  - reflecting Stanford's national appeal.

By position, the Cardinal added five defensive linemen, four defensive backs, two offensive linemen, two running backs, two wide receivers, two quarterbacks, one linebacker and one fullback to its roster. It should be noted players might move to different positions once they arrive on campus.

Of Stanford's 19 signees, seven were named PrepStar All-Americans or were listed as four-star recruits by either Scout or Rivals.com.

Only one player in Stanford's 2011 recruiting class - defensive end Kevin Anderson, who attends Palo Alto (Calif.) High School - is from the Bay Area.

"This signing class is one that will play a big role in the success of Stanford Football," said Shaw. "Our coaches and staff have worked a lot of long hours over the last year or more with most of these young men, and they fill a lot of voids for our football team. We wanted to get faster and more athletic.  At the same time, we wanted to bring in players who demonstrate a certain level of toughness that has been established throughout our program.  I feel we have successfully met all of our goals with this recruiting class."

Stanford landed one of the top linebacker prospects in the nation in James Vaughters (Stone Mountain, GA/Tucker HS), a four-star recruit who is listed as the fourth-best linebacker in the nation by Rivals.com and 44th on ESPNU's Top 150 recruits. A three-year varsity letterwinner, he recorded 95 tackles and four sacks among his 18 tackles-for-loss as a senior.

Vaughters is also one of three Stanford recruits, along with Wayne Lyons and Remound Wright, who are finalists for the prestigious Franklin D. Watkins Award, which honors the top African-American scholar-athlete in the nation. This is the first time in the history of the award that one school has had three Watkins Award finalists in the same recruiting class. Stanford has more Watkins Award winners (4) and finalists (16) than any other school in the country.

The Cardinal strengthened its secondary by signing four defensive backs, including highly-touted Wayne Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Dillard HS), a PrepStar All-American who is listed as the sixth-best safety prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. He is also listed as the 16th top recruit in the nation according to MaxPreps and CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. Lyons has already earned 34 college credits at Broward College.

Ronnie Harris (Atlanta, GA/Westlake HS), Ra'Chard Pippens (McDonough, GA/Ola HS) and Jordan Richards (Folsom, CA/Folsom HS) round out Stanford's list of defensive backs.

PrepStar All-American Charlie Hopkins (Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Preparatory), who is ranked as the 15th-best strong side defensive end in the country by Rivals.com and 31st overall defensive line prospect in the nation by SuperPrep, is one of five defensive linemen included in Stanford's 2011 recruiting class.

Adding depth to Stanford's defensive line prospects are Anderson,  Lance Callihan (Baton Rouge, LA/Catholic HS), Anthony Hayes (Brooklyn Park, MN/St. Thomas Academy) and J.B. Salem (Newport Beach, CA/Harbor HS).

Stanford landed two of the top running back prospects in the nation in Remound Wright (Fort Wayne, IN/Bishop Dwenger HS) and Kelsey Young (Norco, CA/Norco HS). Young, who attends the same high school that produced 2009 Heisman Trophy runner up Toby Gerhart, is listed as the 12th-best running back in the nation and 21st top recruit in California by Rivals.com. He rushed for 2,008 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior.

Wright is listed as the 16th-best running back prospect in the nation and top recruit in the state of Indiana by Rivals.com after he rushed for 2,100 yards and 34 touchdowns for Bishop Dwenger this past season. A two-time all-state selection, Wright finished his high school career as Bishop Dwenger's all-time career leader in rushing (4,730), touchdowns (85) and points (516).

The Cardinal includes two quarterbacks among its list of signees, included PrepStar All-American Evan Crower (San Diego, CA/St. Augustine HS) and SuperPrep All-American Kevin Hogan (McLean, VA/Gonzaga College HS). Crower, who is listed as the 23rd-best quarterback in the nation by Scout.com, threw for 2,232 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior at St. Augustine and passed for over 7,500 yards and 93 touchdowns in his high school career. Hogan, rated as the 13th-best overall quarterback prospect in the nation by Scout.com, passed for 1,820 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.

Stanford also signed Brendon Austin (Parker, CO / Chaparral HS), a four-star recruit who is listed as the 14th-best offensive tackle in the country by Scout.com. A SuperPrep All-American, Austin is ranked as the top recruit in the state of Colorado by both Rivals and Scout.com. Kevin Reihner (Sranton, PA/Scranton Prep) is another highly-touted offensive lineman who was ranked as the 24th-best guard in the nation by Scout.com.

Devon Cajuste (Seaford, NY/Holy Cross HS) and Ty Montgomery (Dallas, TX/St. Mark's School of Texas) comprise Stanford's list of recruits at the wide receiver position. Cajuste, who is listed as the fourth-best overall recruit in New York by SuperPrep, caught 47 passes for 864 yards and nine touchdowns for the Knights as a senior. Montgomery, a four-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout.com, is listed as the 27th-best wide receiver prospect in the nation by Scout.com.

Stanford also signed Patrick Skov, a fullback/linebacker from The Lawrenceville (N.J.) School, the younger brother of current Cardinal linebacker Shayne Skov, who is rated as the fifth-best fullback prospect in the nation by Scout.com.
