STANFORD, Calif. - The 2012 Pac-12 Champion Stanford Cardinal will face the 2012 Big Ten Champion Wisconsin Badgers in the 99th Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO. Stanford will play in its 13th all-time Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 2013 at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif.
"I am extremely proud of our program, scholar-athletes, Coach Shaw and his staff for what they have been able to accomplish over the course of this year," said Stanford's Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bernard Muir. "It is fitting to have them rewarded for their hard work and dedication by playing in the Rose Bowl Game, which is an equally satisfying reward for our supportive fans, students and alumni. We look forward to a great game against Wisconsin."
Stanford has earned its third straight BCS bowl berth at the conclusion of an 11-2 regular season. This marks the first time in school history for Stanford to play in four consecutive bowl games, while also for the first time recording 11 wins in three straight years.
The Cardinal is led by Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw in his second year, twice named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. Shaw owns a 22-4 record as Stanford's head coach.
Wisconsin is playing in its third consecutive Rose Bowl Game, joining Stanford and Oregon as the only teams in the nation to play in BCS bowl games each of the last three years.
The Cardinal earned its automatic BCS qualification by defeating UCLA in the 2012 Pac-12 Football Championship Game on Friday at Stanford Stadium, 27-24. The Badgers earned their berth by defeating Nebraska in the 2012 Big Ten Football Championship Game on Saturday, 70-31.
Stanford is 5-6-1 in 12 previous appearances in the Rose Bowl Game, including a 17-9 loss to Wisconsin in its last appearance in 2000.
The 2013 matchup of Stanford and Wisconsin pits the Cardinal's third-ranked rushing defense in the nation (87.69) against the Badgers' 12th-ranked rushing offense (237.77).
The Cardinal ranks No. 8 in both the final regular season AP Top 25 and USA TODAY Sports Coaches Polls, while Stanford sits at No. 6 in the final BCS Standings of the year. This is the third straight year for Stanford to finish Top-10 in the BCS Standings, following No. 4 rankings in 2010 and 2011.
