Release: 09/15/1999

Sept. 15, 1999

Lisle, Ill. - The Stanford men's cross country team, NCAA champions in 1996 and 1997, is again a strong contender to win the NCAA title in 1999. Stanford is ranked second in the nation in a pre-season poll sponsored by MONDO. Voters in the poll are active members of the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.

The Cardinal generated 384 points, compared to top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Arkansas. The Razorbacks totaled 394 points. Colorado (339 points), North Carolina State (338) and Wisconsin (335) round out the Top 5.

Four Pac-10 teams are ranked in the pre-season Top 25. Arizona (264) is eighth, Oregon is ninth (242), and Arizona State (113) is 21st.

Although Stanford lost the talents of Brad and Brent Hauser, Jason Balkman and Nathan Nutter to graduation, the Cardinal returns a strong corps of runners, and an incoming talented freshman class.

Both the men's and women's teams (also ranked second in the nation), travel to Provo, Utah, this weekend to compete in the BYU Invitational.
