Stanford Softball Unveils 2012 Schedule

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford head coach John Rittman has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2012 softball season. The Cardinal finished 42-17 overall in 2011, made its 14th consecutive NCAA appearance and advanced to its fifth Super Regional in the past seven years.

Stanford will take on some of the nation's best competition this spring. The Cardinal will play 28 games against teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, including conference series' at reigning NCAA Champion Arizona State and at home versus Women's College World Series participant California. Stanford will also play 20 games against teams that finished last season ranked in the top-25.

The Cardinal will prepare for the 2012 campaign with six exhibition games this fall. Stanford plays host to Saint Mary's on Friday, Oct. 21 and San Jose State on Friday, Oct. 28. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m. at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal will also play a pair of double-headers in early November. Stanford faces San Francisco State on Saturday, Nov. 5 starting at Noon and Santa Clara on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m.

Stanford opens the 2012 season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., with games against Cal State Northridge and Texas A&M on Feb. 10. The Cardinal will also face NCAA Tournament participants Texas Tech and Portland State, as well as, UC Santa Barbara during the opening weekend.

The Cardinal will play its first home games during the Stanford Nike Invitational, Feb. 17-19. Stanford's home opener will take place Friday, Feb. 17 with a double-header against NCAA Tournament participant Pacific and Bradley. Nevada will also be on The Farm for the tournament.

Stanford will then hit the road again for the Cathedral City Classic, held Feb. 24-26 in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cardinal opens the tournament with Long Island and Oklahoma. Stanford will also face Long Beach State, New Mexico State and San Diego State, all teams who made postseason appearances in 2011.

Stanford remains on the road the following weekend, traveling to Fullerton, Calif., for the DeMarini Invitational, Mar. 2-4. The Cardinal will play five games over the three days, including contests against Big Ten foes Northwestern and Indiana on Friday and NCAA Tournament participant East Carolina on Sunday.

The Cardinal will conclude the preseason at home in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic, Mar. 9-11. Making their way to The Farm for the tournament are Ole Miss, James Madison, Colorado State, Cal Poly and San Jose State.

The squad will open the Pac-12 Conference season at home against rival California, Mar. 23-25 at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal will continue conference play on the road as they travel to Tucson, Ariz., to battle the Arizona Wildcats, Mar. 30-Apr. 1.

Stanford will return to The Farm to host the Oregon Ducks, Apr. 5-7, before traveling to Los Angeles for a mid-week series at UCLA, Apr. 10-11. The Cardinal will then host Oregon State, Apr. 13-15. After a second trip to Tempe, Ariz., to take on the reigning NCAA Champion Arizona State, Apr. 20-22, the Cardinal will have a bye weekend Apr. 27-29.

Stanford hosts Washington in its final home series, May 4-6, and will honor the careers of its four seniors. The team will close the conference season on the road, traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on conference newcomers Utah, May 10-12.

NCAA Regional action will begin May 17, and leads up to the 31st annual Women's College World Series, May 31-June 6 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The 2011 season marked the 14th straight NCAA Tournament appearance for the Cardinal. Stanford ended the season ranked No. 10 nationally and finished fourth in the competitive Pac-10 Conference.
