Michael Stember Finishes Fourth In 1,500 Meters at World University Games

Beijing, China - Stanford Olympian Michael Stember led at the start, then moved from ninth to fourth in the last 200 meters in a kicker's race in the 1,500 meter finals on Wednesday at the World University Games.

Stember, a 2001 Stanford graduate, was timed in 3:44.91, along with Sergio Gallardo of Spain. Stember's teammate, Jonathon Riley, was ninth in 3:46.37. Spain's P.A. Esteso won in 3:43.98.

In the women's 1,500 meters, Stanford's Malindi Elmore finished tenth in a time of 4:15.6, the third-best time in school history, and fourth best in Pac-10 history. Sureyya Ayhan of Turkey won the gold medal in 4:06.91. Elmore had reached the finals with a time of 4:15.37 in the prelims.
