Veterans Help Mustangs Defeat Stanford, 27-9

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The upperclassmen helped Cal Poly come from behind to defeat Stanford 27-9 Thursday night in front of 315 at Mott Gym. The win brings the Mustangs to 7-7 overall this season (2-3 in PAC-10) while the Cardinal drop to 2-9 (1-5 in PAC-10).

Stanford started the night with wins by Rudy Ruiz (South Milwaukee, WI/Thomas More HS) and Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) in the 118 and 126 pound weight classes to lead 6-0. Cal Poly's Cedric Haymon (Rancho San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley HS) got the Mustangs on the board with a 5-2 victory over Jason Talbott (LaGrange, KY/Oldham County HS) at 134 pounds. Stanford's Beau Weiner (Placerville, CA/Ponderosa HS) edged out Cal Poly's Jesse Reta (Union City, CA/James Logan HS) 5-4, to put the Cardinal up by six.

It was all Cal Poly from that point on. Craig Welk (Vista, CA/Palomar JC) earned a major decision over B.J. Sanchez (Arvada, CO/Regis Jesuit HS) with a 9-1 victory in the 150 pound weight class. Welk notched a near-fall, two takedowns and one escape to put the Mustangs within two of the Cardinal.

At 158 pounds, Mustang David Wells (Orange, CA/El Modena HS) blanked Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), 9-0, with a near-fall, two takedowns and one escape. Wells' victory put the Mustangs ahead for good, 11-9.

Joey Hart (Nevada City, CA/Nevada Union HS) at 167 pounds and Brian Bowles (Laytonville, CA/Santa Rosa JC) at 177 pounds followed with victories to put the Mustangs up 17-9. Mike French (El Cajon, CA/Granite Hills HS) won by major decision, 16-4, notching seven takedowns and one escape at 190 pounds. Cal Poly's Gan McGee (Ukiah, CA/Ukiah HS) won by forfeit in the heavyweight decision to seal the 27-9 victory over the Mustangs.
