Long Beach, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team got off to a great start at the 2002 Pac-10 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif. The Cardinal jumped out to the early lead with a one-day total of 251. Arizona is second at 191.5 and California is third at 187.

Stanford won three of six events on the day including both relays.

The Cardinal kicked off the meet with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:17.24 in the 200 free relay. The relay team of Randall Bal, Jeff Guyman, Bobby O'Bryan and Peter Marshall took top honors over second-place finisher Cal in this event.

In the second event of the day, the 500 free, sophomore Matt Sorlien placed third in 4:18.82 to automatically qualify for NCAAs. Sorlien took five seconds off of his previous 2002 best time in this event. His time ranks sixth best all-time on the Farm. USC's Erik Vendt won the event in 4:16.31. Cardinal John Waters took first in the consolation final with a time of 4:24.04.

Stanford finished 1-2 in the 200 IM as freshman swimmer Dan Trupin raced to a school and Pac-10 record time of 1:43.83. Trupin's time is an automatic qualifying time for NCAAs. Sophomore Markus Rogan placed second (1:44.58). Trupin's time broke the Pac-10 and Stanford mark set by teammate Rogan last year. Cardinal Michael Bruce took fifth (1:47.71) and Michael O'Neil was sixth (1:48.50).

The Cardinal's top finisher in the 50 free was junior Randall Bal who finished third with a time of 19:62. Senior Jeff Guyman took fourth (19.82). Sophomore Bobby O'Bryan won the consolation final with his fastest time on the year (19.88). Cardinal Scott Ransenberg finished right behind him with a 19.96.

The fifth event of the day was the men's one meter diving, which was held last week in Tucson, Arizona. Stanford's top finisher was freshman Adam Peterson, who took eighth (448.05).

Stanford took top honors in the last event of the day - the 400 medley relay. The Cardinal relay team of Peter Marshall, Dan Westcott, Michael Bruce and Andrew Schnell broke the Pac-10 meet record with their time of 3:09.22. The time is an NCAA automatic qualifying time and the fastest by a Cardinal relay team this year.

Action continues tomorrow with prelims in the morning and finals in the evening from the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
