Stanford Named No. 4 Seed at NCAA Nationals

The NCAA announced today the teams and individuals that qualified to compete for the 2008 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships. The championships, hosted by the University of Georgia, will be held in Athens, Georgia, at Stegeman Coliseum, April 24-26.

Stanford earned the fourth seed after a 197.525 regional score last weekend in Baton Rouge. While the Cardinal finished second to LSU at the Central Regional, their team score at the regional was the third highest score in the nation. Preliminary team and all-around competition will be conducted in two sessions Thursday, April 24 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six competition Friday, April 25 at 6 p.m. The top four individuals from each session in each event (plus ties) from the preliminary team and all-around competition will compete in the individual-event competition Saturday, April 26 at 6 p.m.

Once the National Qualifying Score (NQS) was calculated, teams were ranked based on the NQS from 1 to 12. Teams 1, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 12 were placed in Group A; and teams 2, 3, 6, 7, 10 and 11 placed in Group B. The host team and its corresponding group will compete in the second session. Team qualifiers and individual qualifiers for the 2008 women's gymnastics championships are as follows:

This marks the ninth time in program history that the Cardinal have reached the NCAA Championships, the most recent appearance was last season when Stanford finished fifth overall in 2007. The Cardinal have been to the prestigious "Super Six" three times in the last six years.

The Cardinal is also coming off a third Pac-10 title in the past five years and with everybody back from the 2007 "Super Six", Stanford is loaded and ready for another run in 2008. The team is also confident and putting forth some of their best routines at the most important juncture of the season. Their regional team score of 197.525 was their best score of the season.

Leadership will also be a key with six seniors and three juniors leading the Cardinal in 2007. Senior Tabitha Yim produced an all-around score of 39.725 last weekend, which was second best in the entire country during regional competition. Yim will be in the mix to build on her total of 11 All-American awards throughout her illustrious Cardinal career.

Stanford will begin on floor in the NCAA Championships and will next rotate to vault. After a bye in the third rotation, the Cardinal will head to bars and will finish the first day of competition on beam.
