STANFORD, Calif. - Eddie Penev has been named the NCAA National Gymnast of the Week and MPSF Gymnast of the Week. This marks the first time the junior from Rochester, N.Y. has been honored with the national award.
Penev set career-highs on all-around (89.200), floor exercise (16.200), still rings (14.500) and parallel bars (15.000) en route to winning the all-around and leading Stanford to a sweep at the Stanford Open against California, Nebraska and Washington. Penev also won the individual title on floor, vault and parallel bars and the Cardinal set a season-high (348.400) for team performance, moving to 4-1 on the season.
Penev ranks second in the country on vault and all-around, third on floor exercise, twelfth on parallel bars and seventeenth on high bar. He has set career marks for all-around in each of his last two meets.
Voting for the NCAA award is performed by the 17 active college coaches and the 35 College Gymnastics Association Honorary Lifetime Members, plus seven major club programs.
