Quotes from head coach Johnny Dawkins on the announcement of associate head coach Dick Davey retiring at the end of this season.

On what Coach Davey has meant to his growth as a head coach...
"Well everyone talks about how much he has done for the game. As good of a coach that he is, Dick is an even better person. That's what I've learned about Coach Davey. I've definitely enjoyed working with him and loved every minute of it. You're talking about a class guy, and someone who cares about our game at the highest level. I don't think you'll find anyone better than Coach Davey in regards to those things."

How his relationship with Coach Davey began...
"It's kind of an interesting story. Of course, Coach K was a good resource for me at Duke. Spending time and talking with people I knew, and really just getting to know the Bay Area, his name was one that would always come up. It's kind of funny. I was interviewing someone and talking to him about a position, and Coach Davey's name just keeps coming up. So I'm hearing his name repeatedly- Coach Davey, Coach Davey. Coach K had mentioned him, and I didn't have a chance to call him yet because he was actually out of town. So I called him, we met in person and hit it off right away. What a great human being. His value is about helping young people grow and mature; really just bigger than basketball. I had always been taught the same thing, that what we do is bigger than basketball. You have a responsibility in developing young men. So it's been a great fit and I've enjoyed working with him."

If he would have liked Coach Davey to stay longer...
"I would like him to stay as long as he wants to stay. I can never say his age because I'd probably get myself in trouble. I understand exactly where he is though. He's at a stage in his life where he would like to spend time with his wife, the grandkids and the family. Our life is this, we live what we do. I just think he would like to spend some more of his years with his family and I'm excited for him to have that opportunity. And of course, to go fishing."

The most important things he learned from Coach Davey...
"Just to be true to who I am, and to what I believe. Follow my instincts. That's something that he's always done. So those are some things I think I've really taken from him. Just how kind of a person he is. I've met a ton of people, and I haven't met one person that's had nothing but positive things to say about him. And that's how you should go through. That's how I want to go through my career. And to be a good representative for my children. So he's been a great role model in that respect."
