Oct. 14, 2005

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford's four returning All-Americans will join headliner Martina Navratilova for the 2005 Women's Tennis Classic at the Harbor Point Racquet & Beach Club in Mill Valley this weekend for a two-day event to help raise money for two charities: the Marin Breast Cancer Council and Youth Tennis Advantage. Alice Barnes, Amber Liu, Theresa Logar and Anne Yelsey will represent Stanford at this weekend's event.

The Women's Tennis Classic is the first of three high profile tennis exhibitions hosted by the Harbor Point Charitable Foundation to benefit Marin County charities. The mission of the exhibition is to create an environment encouraging sponsors and spectators to join together with tennis professionals and collegiate tennis leaders for a weekend of thrilling tennis - all to support two worthy causes: the Marin Breast Cancer Council and Youth Tennis Advantage.

The original Women's Tennis Classics concept was organized in 1983 by Billie Jean King and Rosie Casals with the help of many celebrated athletes. More than 20 years later, the success of this remarkable event has increased exponentially. Many of the world's best female tennis players have helped to raise millions of dollars for deserving charities across the nation.

The exhibition schedule includes doubles matches between top women's tennis professionals, Cal and Stanford women's tennis teams in their collegiate challenge, and pro/am doubles matches with professionals and tournament sponsors.

The Harbor Point Charitable Foundation selected two charities to benefit from the 2005 Women's Tennis Classic: The Marin Breast Cancer Council and Youth Tennis Advantage. The Marin Breast Cancer Council is dedicated to supporting the thousands of Bay Area men and women who are afflicted with this life-threatening disease. Youth Tennis Advantage is an organization committed to introducing underprivileged children to the wonderful sport of tennis, keeping them physically fit, mentally strong and protecting them from adverse influences. For more information on the charities.
