DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Meghan Walters continued her hot streak with a three-goal effort to lead Duke to a 9-5 win over No. 20 Stanford at Koskinen Stadium on Friday evening. With the loss, the Cardinal fall to 7-6 on the season, while the Blue Devils improve to 9-4 on the year.
After just over 14 minutes of scoreless action, Duke broke through for the game's first goal when Lauren Kickham scored at the 15:43 mark for her second goal of the season. On the ensuing draw control, Walters controlled the ball at the midfield stripe and went straight up field to collect her first goal and give Duke a 2-0 advantage with 15:54 gone by in the contest.
Stanford responded with back-to-back goals to tie the contest. Abbi Hills netted the first Cardinal goal at 18:35 and Liz Piselli added her first career goal at 20:31.
Walters answered back with a free position goal with just under eight minutes remaining in the half to give Duke a 3-2 edge. The Blue Devils ripped off three goals in the final 1:12 of the first half to pull away from Stanford.
Kim Cahill sparked an early second half charge by Stanford. The senior midfield recorded a goal at the 41:47 mark and then assisted on a Nina Pantano goal at 45:34 as the Cardinal cut the halftime deficit in half at 6-4.
The Blue Devils would add two more scores to push their lead to 8-4. With 39 second remaining, Hills collected her team-leading 27th goal of the season for Stanford, but Chrest answered back for the Blue Devils with a goal 20 seconds later to close the scoring at 9-5.
Both goalies played well in Friday's contest with senior Christina Saikus and Duke's Megan Huether each registering 11 saves.
The Cardinal will face the Davidson Wildcats at Duke University on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
