STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford freshman midfielder Mariah Nogueira was selected by the Pacific-10 Conference as its women's soccer Player of the Week for her performances in Stanford's sweep of Top 10 teams last weekend.
Nogueira, a native of Westminster, Calif., headed in the opening goal in Stanford's 2-0 victory over No. 5 Notre Dame on Sunday, and provided dominating defense in both victories, including a 2-1 decision over No. 7 Purdue on Friday. Both matches came at the Santa Clara Classic and earned Nogueira all-tournament honors.
The goal, which came in the 56th minute, was the first of her collegiate career and the first of two by the Cardinal during a three-minute span. She made a run into the penalty area to meet Teresa Noyola's free kick.
It was another example of how effective Nogueira can be through the air, both in her defensive midfield spot and by moving forward on set pieces.
This is the first such honor for Nogueira and second for a Stanford player this season, after Christen Press was Player of the Week on Aug. 25.
