STANFORD, Calif. -- Flanker Troy Walters was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1998 Stanford Football Team and defensive tackle Willie Howard won the prestigious Al Masters Award at the annual Stanford Football Awards Banquet held December 1 at the Hotel Sofitel in Redwood Shores.
Walters, who caught 52 passes for 880 yards (16.9 ypc) and five touchdowns, was limited this season due to an ankle injury and played in just six full games. He set a Stanford record this season for career receiving yards and moved up to third on the school's all-time receptions list. Walters will return in 1999 for his senior season.
Howard, a junior from Mountain View, was presented with the Al Masters Award as the "player displaying the highest degree of leadership and respect of teammates." He also won the Russell-Huston Award as the "player exemplifying aggressiveness, exceptional performance and unherahlded efforts."
Howard and senior Donnie Spragan were named team captians for the 1998 season. Spragan, an outside linebacker who was recently named Second-Team All-Pac-10, also won the Jim Reynolds Award for the "senior player whose courage on the field and devotion to the game are an insipiration to all."
