Stanford, Calif. - With their departure date of Monday, May 27 fast approaching, the Stanford Women's Sailing Team is training hard on the waters of Redwood City Turning Basin this week. In preparation for this year's North American Championship (to be held in Keehi Lagoon, home waters of U Hawaii) top-ranked teams from Brown University, Hobart/Wm Smith Colleges and St. Mary's College of Maryland have arrived to spar against the Cardinal Women.
2002 All-PCYRA A-Division skipper Jennifer Porter '04 has been working with three crews, each specializing in a different wind condition; Jessica Gray '04 is Porter's light-air crew, and has helped Porter to victories at Yale Women's and the Fall and Spring PCC's. Sarah Zukerman '03, returning from a semester abroad, has sparked new life into the Cardinal Women, has helped Porter master the mid-range of 10-15 knots of breeze. Zuk helped Porter dominate the Spring PCC's. Liz Shearer '04 transferred from UW this year and has segued nicely into both crew and skipper positions. Most recently, the Porter/Shearer duo won numerous races at the windy Dellenbaugh invite at Brown University last month. We expect Liz to help Porter dominate in the windiest conditions the team might see in Hawaii.
Also voted All-PCYRA this year, B-Division skipper Ashley Frush '04 has matured tremendously as a competitor over the past year. Crewing for Frush in light winds will be Jenais Zarlin, who has helped Frush dominate at regattas like the Navy Spring Intersectional. 2002 All-PCYRA crew Kara Sweeney '03 will sub in for Zarlin when the winds strengthen to the traditional Hawaiian trades. Sweeney is a force to be reckoned with on the Women's team, and has sailed with Frush to victory in the Spring PCC's, winning B-Division by 20 points.
Gray, Zukerman and Sweeney will all be spending 2 full weeks in Hawaii. They will sail with both the women for Women's North Americans (May 29-31) and the men in the Coed NA's (June 5-7). Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-American crew and skipper honors will be announced at the conclusion of the Co-ed NA's on June 7.
