BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Stanford synchronized swimming team finished first in both the duet and trio events, Thursday, at the Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center at the 35th annual U.S. Collegiate National Championships. The event runs Mar. 17-19 and is hosted by Canisius College.
Stanford juniors Maria Koroleva and Olivia Morgan captured first place in the duet semifinal with a score of 91.875. Finishing second in the duet was Ohio State's Yuliya Maryanko and Michelle Theriault with a 91.375. The Cardinal's Madison Crocker and Morgan Fuller took third with a 90.250.
In the trio, Morgan teamed up with Crocker and Fuller to capture the top spot with an 89.625. Stanford also claimed the second spot in the trio semifinal as Koroleva, junior Alex Bollaidlaw and sophomore Jessica Guenther turned in an 89.375. Ohio State's Alexandra Beckett, Deborah Shim and Theriault were third with 89.000 points, while the Buckeyes' Lauren Nicholson, Paige Ramsey and Lauren Robinson finished fourth with 88.375 points.
Stanford senior Corinne Smith, junior Koko Urata and sophomore Wendy Lu were an honorary trio team and scored an 88.250. The University of Incarnate Word's Emily Burkhart, Anna Nelson and Rosilyn Tegart ended up in fifth place with an 87.375.
In the solo semifinal, Stanford senior Gayle Lee was fourth with a score of 85.875. Claiming the top spot in the solo semifinal was Ohio State's Maryanko. Saki Fujise from the University of Incarnate Word took second with a 90.000, while Canisius College's Svetlana Ponkratova was third with an 88.500.
The team semifinals will take place Friday, Mar. 18 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The finals for all four events will be held on Saturday, Mar. 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
