Synchro Sweeps William and Mary Invitational

In their first meet of the season, Stanford Synchronized Swimming traveled to Newport News, Va., to compete in the William and Mary Invitational. Other teams participating included the College of William and Mary, the University of Mary Washington, the University of Richmond and the University of Incarnate Word.

The Cardinal took an early lead at the competition with a strong first and second finish in the opening trio event. Samantha Bongiovanni-Duclos, Sara Lowe and Courtenay Stewart's score of 91.5 elevated them to gold, while Poppy Carlig, Melissa Knight and Cassidy Ramage captured second with a 90.0. Stanford's trio of Mari Maekawa, Hilary Homenko and Hae-Rin Lee finished fourth with a score of 88.167.

Powerful routines in the subsequent duet event highlighted the Cardinal's talent and strength. In a close competition amongst the two Stanford duets, Bongiovanni-Duclos and Katie Norris captured first with a score of 93.3; Lowe and Stewart placed a very close second, at 93.1.

A top-three sweep in the ensuing solo event demonstrated the team's will to succeed. Stanford soloist Stewart won first place with a score of 94.1. Cardinal Katie Norris followed in second with 93.3, and in a close race for third, Stanford's Katherine Norris earned the bronze with a final score of 89.1.

Stanford's deep team of talented swimmers truly shined in the competition's concluding team event, where the Cardinal A squad of Bongiovanni-Duclos, Carlig, Knight, Ashley McHugh, Elizabeth-Anne Markman, Katie Norris, Lowe, Ramage and Stewart captured the gold with a 95.3. Stanford's B squad of Maekawa, Homenko, Katherine Norris and Lee placed a strong second, at 88.6.

Next weekend, the Cardinal B squad will travel to Oregon to contend with the Western Oregon University. The following weekend, the complete team will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete against the University of Alabama.
