Nashville, Tenn. - The Stanford women's lacrosse team fell to No. 6 ranked Duke in Nashville on Saturday, 18-1. Junior Megan Burker scored the lone Cardinal goal, while freshman goalkeeper Laura Shane made 16 saves in the cage. Stanford falls to 5-3 on the season, while the Blue Devils improve to 8-2.
After a scoreless eight minutes to open the game, Duke exploded for three goals in a span of less than three minutes to establish control in the first half. The second tally of the game for Duke's Katie Chrest at the 18:31 mark of the first half pushed the Duke lead to 4-0, and the Blue Devils would eventually take a 10-0 advantage into intermission.
The Blue Devils picked up where they left off in the second period, scoring five goals to push the lead to 15-0, before Burker got the Cardinal on the board with a goal at the 11:52 mark. Duke regained control, however, as Kaitlin Hancock scored two of the last three Blue Devil goals to seal the victory.
Chrest tallied a game-high five goals for Duke. The Cardinal were out-shot by a 45-11 margin, with sophomore Michelle DeChant and senior Nina Pantano each attempting a team-high three shots. Shane made 16 saves in net, while Duke's Megan Huether collected five saves.
The one Stanford goal is the lowest single-game scoring total for a Cardinal squad since Stanford fell to Brown by a 10-1 score during the 2000 season.
The Cardinal returns to action on Monday afternoon, as the squad takes on No. 19 ranked Vanderbilt in Nashville at 2:00 pm.
