Stanford, Calif. -- Freshman OF Cassi Brangham (Clovis, CA) recorded a seventh inning hit to drive in senior C Kellie Wiginton (Fresno, CA) to give the ninth-ranked Stanford softball team (34-9, 3-6 Pac-10) a 3-2 victory over 14th-ranked Oregon State (27-13-1, 1-7 Pac-10) today at the Stanford Softball Complex. The win is the second consecutive for the Cardinal in Pac-10 play.
Stanford had led the game 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but a home run by OSU's Shelly Prochaska tied the score, forcing the Cardinal to bat in the bottom half of the inning. Wiginton led off with a single to right-centerfield which was mishandled by RF Brooke Rutschman, allowing Wiginton to advance to second. A groundout by sophomore SS Robin Walker (La Palma, CA) allowed Wiginton to advance to third. OSU pitcher Tarrah Beyster intentionally walked sophomore OF Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, CA) and sophomore 1B Sarah Beeson (Tucson, AZ) to load the bases. Beyster struckout freshman Maureen LeCocq (Woodland Hills, CA), before allowing the game-winning hit through the infield by Brangham.
Oregon State scored the first run of the game on a leadoff double by Jennie Jodoin and a one out double by Cara Maxey in the second inning.
The Cardinal responded to take the lead on Mendoza's seventh home run of the season. The two-run home run gave Stanford a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Stanford P Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) improved her record to 17-5 with the win. Despite giving up 10 hits, four were hits to leadoff an inning, Sorensen allowed two earned runs and struckout four OSU batters for her seventh complete game of the year.
The Cardinal will resume play tomorrow, when the 23rd-ranked Oregon Ducks visit the Stanford Softball Complex at 2 p.m. The Cardinal and Ducks will conclude the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
