Track Squads Travel To Drake Relays, Cal-Nevada State Championships

Stanford, Calif. - This will be another busy weekend for the Stanford Track & Field team ... One group of athletes is heading to Des Moines, Ia., to compete in the prestigous Drake Relays (April 28-29), while a sizable group of Cardinal athletes will compete in the annual California-Nevada State meet at Berkeley (April 29-30).

Several of Stanford top distance runners will travel to the Drake Relays. That list includes Brad Hauser, Brent Hauser, Gabe Jennings, Jonathon Riley, Michael Stember, Lauren Fleshman, Sally Glynn, and Erin Sullivan.

Thus far in the 2000 outdoor season, eleven Stanford track & field athletes (seven men, four women) have qualified for the NCAA Championships (May 31 - June 3) at Duke University. Eleven athletes (seven men, four women) have NCAA provisional times or marks.

NCAA Automatic Qualifiers (NCAA Track & Field Championships, Duke University, May 31 - June 3)

Jason Balkman, Senior, Saratoga, Ca
Qualified automatically for the NCAA's with a time of 28:47.82 in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... His 10,000 time is #2 in the Pac-10 this year behind teammate Brent Hauser (28:23.37).

Don Conrad, Senior, St. Louis, Mo
The graduate student, and a transfer from Dartmouth gained entry into the NCAA's in the 10,000 meters with a time of 28:55.52 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... His previous best in the 10,000 meters had been 29:38.02 ... His time is fourth-best in the Pac-10 this year.

Lauren Fleshman, Freshman, Canyon Country, Ca
Ran the third fastest time in Pac-10 history at 15:50.18 in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15) ... Her time qualified her for the NCAA's and exceeded the Olympic Trials standard ... Her time is a freshman school record, easily beating the previous best time of 16:01.03 in 1983 by Alison Wiley ... Her time is also third best overall in school history ... Her time is #1 in the Pac-10 this year.

Sally Glynn, Junior, Rockville, Md
One of three Stanford 5,000 meters to qualify automatically for the NCAA's at Duke in June ... Ran a career-best 15:59.10 at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15), easily beating her previous best of 16:22.39 ... Her time in the 5,000 meters is fourth-best all-time, and third-best in the Pac-10 this year.

Brad Hauser, Senior, Kingwood, Tx
Off to a great start in the 2000 outdoor season with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 28:52.63 in the 10,000 meters ... Gained his entry to the NCAA's at the Stanford Spring Opener (3/4) ... His 10,000 time is #3 in the Pac-10 this year behind teammates Brent Hauser (28:23.37) and Jason Balkman (28:47.82).

Brent Hauser, Senior, Kingwood, Tx
One of four Stanford runners who has qualified automatically in the 10,000 meters ... Ran a 28:23.37 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25), second-best in Stanford school history ... His time is #1 in the Pac-10 this year.

Gabe Jennings, Sophomore, Madison, Wi
Qualified for the NCAA's with a first place finish in the 1,500 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15) ... Ran the second fastest 1,500 meters in school history in his 2000 outdoor debut in 3:40.08, just short of the school record of 3:39.26 by Marc Olesen in 1988 ... His 1,500 time is #1 in the Pac-10 this year ... Jennings also has an NCAA qualifying time in the 5,000 meters at 13:44.60, set at the Stanford Invitational (3/25) ... That time is third-best in Stanford track & field history ... His 5,000 meter time is #2 in the Pac-10 this year ... Jennings is the Stanford first Cardinal athlete to qualify in more than one event this year at the NCAA's.

Summer Pierson, Senior, Niskayuna, NY
Met the Olympic and NCAA qualfying standard in the discus with a career-best throw of 190-9 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (4/14) ... Her throw was nearly nine feet better than her previous best ... Her throw was also second-best in school history and eighth-best in Pac-10 history ... Her throw is second-best in the Pac-10 this year.

Michael Stember, Junior, Fair Oaks, Ca
Exceeded the NCAA qualifying standard in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:40.71 at the Stanford Invitational (3/26) ... His time is third-best in school history ... His 1,500 time is #2 in the Pac-10 behind teammate Gabe Jennings (3:40.08) this year ... Also qualified provisionally in the 800 meters with a winning time of 1:48.16 at the Bruce Drummond Invitatational (4/22) in Sacramento ... The 800 meter time is #2 in the Pac-10 this year.

Toby Stevenson, Senior, Odessa, Tx
Has made the NCAA's for a third straight season ... Qualified for the national meet with a leap of 18-2 1/2 at the Stanford Invitational, which tied his career-best ... Stevenson set his qualifying mark at the Stanford Invitational (3/26) ... His vault is #2 in the Pac-10 this year.

Erin Sullivan, Freshman, Jericho, Vt
The freshman from Vermont is off to a great start in her Stanford career ... Qualified for NCAA's with a time of 16:11.14 at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/15), the eight-best time in school history ... Her time is fifth-best in the Pac-10 this year.
