April 6, 2006
This weekend, the Stanford women's lacrosse team hosts the largest lacrosse event west of the Mississippi: the 2006 Sling It! Western States Tournament. The fifth annual event begins Saturday, April 8 and continues through Sunday, April 9. Games will be played at the Stanford Turf Field and the Menlo-Atherton High School Turf Field.
This year 23 teams are set to compete in the tournament, including collegiate and post-collegiate clubs from California, Oregon, Washington and Arizona. Last year, close to 1,000 players, referees and fans visited the Stanford campus for the event.
The Western States Tournament is just one of many events that the Stanford coaches and players host to promote lacrosse in the community. Head coach Michele Uhlfelder, along with her assistants and players have dedicated themselves to making Stanford University a hub of lacrosse on the west coast. With events such as this weekend's tournament, combined with seven games against ranked programs, a home match with the defending national champion and a ranking as high as No. 16 this year, the program has taken huge steps to increase the game's exposure.
The tournament will feature Sling It! lacrosse equipment and apparel sales, as well as tournament t-shirt sales. Sling It! is the tournament's official sponsor, a company that has made a significant local investment in the game by opening the first lacrosse-only retail store in the area.
Stanford will cap off the exciting weekend of lacrosse with its fourth MPSF match of the season on Monday night. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Maloney Field. Six Cardinal seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
