Oct. 9, 1999

Stanford - Second-ranked Stanford and fourth-ranked California each posted two victories to advance to Sunday's championship water polo semi-finals of the NorCal Invitational at deGuerre Pool.

Brian Heifferon scored six points in Stanford's two victories over UC Santa Cruz and UC San Diego on Saturday.

In Stanford's opening game, Heifferon scored three points to lead the Cardinal to a 20-2 victory over UC Santa Cruz. Later in the day, Heifferon tallied three times to pace a 13-4 victory over tenth-ranked UC San Diego.

Stanford will play defending NCAA champion USC in Sunday's semi-finals at 11 a.m. at deGuerre Pool.

The California Golden Bears advanced to Sunday's championship semi-final with a 12-3 victory over UC Davis, and a 9-8 decision over Pacific.

Cal will face top-ranked UCLA at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday.

Nine different Cal players scored at least one point in the opening round victory over UC Davis. Adam Metzger, Eldad Hazor and Joe Kaiser each scored two points. In their second game of the day, California edged Pacific, 9-8, as Albert Won and Spencer Dornin each scored two goals.

The semi-finals on Sunday at deGuerre Pool feature the top four teams in the country. Top-ranked UCLA (9-1) faces fourth-ranked California (7-4) at 9:50 a.m., while second-ranked Stanford (10-1) faces third-ranked and defending NCAA champion USC (10-1) at 11:00 a.m.

The 16-team tournament boasts the top 10 teams in the country. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Berkeley this year. But due to construction on the new Haas Pavilion, Spieker Aquatics Complex is still not fully operational, thus the tourney was moved to Stanford.
