Tucson, Ariz. -- The ninth-ranked Stanford softball team (32-9, 1-6 Pac-10) fell to second-ranked Arizona (42-3, 6-0 Pac-10) 8-4 tonight at the Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium. Sophomore CF Jessica Mendoza went 4-for-4 for the Cardinal, reaching base on two singles and two doubles, while scoring a run.
After the Cardinal stranded two runners on base in the first inning, the Wildcats responded with four runs in their half of the inning. Arizona's Nicole Giordano led off with an infield hit, followed by a single by Katie Swan. Giordano scored after Cardinal 3B Jennifer Shideler misplayed a ball hit by Arizona's Toni Mascarenas. Arizona would make the score 3-0 and close out the frame with a four run lead after Lauren Bauer stole home on a double steal.
After falling behind 6-0, the Cardinal would mount a comeback attempt in the top of the third inning. With one out, SS Robin Walker singled and reached third on Mendoza's double to centerfield, her second hit of the night. But Arizona stifled the rally with a strikeout and groundout to shortstop.
Arizona added runs in the third inning and in the fourth inning on a home run by Lindsey Collins.
The Cardinal, with the threat of the eight run rule ending the game, scored two runs in its half of the fifth. C Kellie Wiginton led off with a single and moved to third base on Mendoza's second double of the night a batter later. Mendoza now has 11 doubles this season. 1B Sarah Beeson pushed Mendoza to third base on a single, which allowed Mendoza to score on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by P/2B Maureen LeCocq.
Stanford scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning.
The Cardinal will conclude its two game series with the Wildcats tomorrow at 1 p.m.
