STANFORD, Calif. - Michele Uhlfelder, a USA National Team member since 1991, has been hired as the head coach of the Stanford Women's Lacrosse team. The announcement was made today by athletic director Ted Leland.
"Michele is a great addition to our staff. We are very excited for our athletes and our lacrosse program," said Leland. "Michele's leadership ability, vision and technical expertise make her eminently qualified to lead Stanford Lacrosse to national prominence."
Uhlfelder comes to Stanford from Duke University, where she was the associate head coach from 1999-2000. Prior to 1999, she was an assistant coach at Duke (1998-1999) and also at Old Dominion University (1994-1998). Uhlfelder's coaching accomplishments include a Final Four appearance for Duke in the 1999 season and six All-America selections as well as a Conference Championship at Old Dominion in 1995.
"I'm very excited. I think Stanford is a great place and it knows how to win," said Uhlfelder. "It's a very exciting place from a recruiting standpoint because it gives West Coast kids a good reason to stay on the West Coast."
Her national team experience dates back to 1991 when she was a member of the Under-23 team. "I think for me personally, it's a great fit. My background in lacrosse through the national governing body and national team experience is perfect," said Uhlfelder. She was a member of the Great Britain and Australia Touring Teams in 1996 and 2000, respectively. Uhlfelder also competed on the 1997 World Cup Championship Team and earned Player-of-the-Match honors.
As a four-year letterwinner (1987-1991) and captain her senior year at the University of Maryland, Uhlfelder led the Terrapins to national runner-up finishes in 1990 and 1991. She made the All-Tournament team for the national championships twice, and as a senior, Uhlfelder was a First Team All-American and the National Offensive Player of the Year.
"One of our goals is to make Stanford the hub of lacrosse on the West Coast, whether it be through camps, clinics or bringing lacrosse events to campus." Uhlfelder is currently a member of the United States Lacrosse, Inc. Board of Directors on the Regions Council, and served as the chair for the Southeast Super-Region selection committee in 2000.
