Stanford, Calif. - No. 11 Stanford travels to the Rocky Mountains this weekend to face Denver in a key MPSF matchup. The Cardinal and the Pioneers are currently tied atop the conference with identical 2-0 records. UC Davis is also 2-0 early in the conference season and plays Denver on Friday.
Sunday's game will take place at Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium 30 minutes after the men's game, which begins at 10:00 a.m., meaning the women's game should start a bit earlier than the scheduled 1:00 p.m. start time.
It will be the first of two trips for Stanford to Denver, as the Pioneers also will host this year's MPSF Conference Tournament. This year's tournament will have more at stake than ever with an automatic berth to an NCAA play-in game on the line.
The Cardinal is 13-3 all-time against Denver, including a 17-10 win at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium last season. Stanford and Denver have strong recent history with Stanford knocking off the Pioneers in the MPSF title game in both 2007 and 2008. Denver last won the matchup during the regular season in 2008, which was also the last time the schools met in Denver.
The Cardinal will bring a balanced attack to Denver with seven players with double figure goals on the season. Sarah Flynn leads Stanford with 23 goals, while Leslie Foard and Dana Lindsay have 21 apiece. Stanford's new all-time assist leader Claire Hubbard leads the Cardinal with 25 assists and is tied with Flynn and Lauren Schmidt for the team lead with 29 points.
Lexi Sanders leads Denver as the nation's top distributor with 30 assists. The Pioneers leading goal scorer is Ali Flury with 36. The high-powered attack will run into Stanford goalkeeper Annie Read who is currently fifth in the nation with 125 saves.
