Berkeley, CA - Stanford Women's Lacrosse (8-7 overall, 7-0 MPLL) returned to league play after splitting games on the East Coast last weekend and beat the Golden Bears 10-8 in their second contest vs. California (10-6 overall, 5-3 MPLL) this month. This victory marks the Cardinal's seventh-straight league win of the season and 15th consecutive league win under head coach Michele Uhlfelder.
Stanford opened up the game with a quick 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and would not let up on the offensive attack for the remainder of the first half. Two goals by freshman Kelsey Twist and one each by senior Liz Britt, sophomores Abbi Hills and Jess Scott and freshman Nina Pantano, put the Cardinal ahead 6-0 going into the break. Cal couldn't seem to gain any control during the half, winning only 1 draw control and making 7 shots on goal.
Leading scorer Twist put in another goal to start the second half, giving Stanford an impressive 7-0 lead; Twist leads the team with 31 goals and 10 assists this season for 41 total points. Cal was undaunted despite the slow start and after a goal by senior Laura Kado with 24:13 to play in the game, the Bears scored another 3 consecutive goals to bring the score to 7-4 with under 10 minutes left in the game. Both teams went back-to-back with goals to close out the game, and the Cardinal stayed on top finishing the match with a 2-goal lead.
For the final game of the regular season, Stanford hosts UC Davis on Tuesday, April 30 at 7pm on Maloney Field. Following that contest the Cardinal will head to the Mountain Pacific Lacrosse League (MPLL) tournament next weekend, May 4-5, at Memorial Stadium. The Bears will face Denver at 11:00 a.m. on May 4 while Stanford will take on either Saint Mary's or UC Davis at 2:00 p.m. On Sunday May 5, the third-place match will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the championship match to follow at 2:00 p.m.
