New Haven, CT -
The Stanford coed team opened its season this past weekend in New Haven, CT for the Harry Anderson Trophy hosted by the Yale University Sailing Team, finishing 18th overall in the 26 team race.
"The result did not meet our goal, but I feel that we learned a great deal and we have a good starting block now for the rest of the season," said head coach Jay Kehoe.
The Cardinal finished 16th in A division and 20th in B. Stepping into coed A division after a successful season last spring in women's was senior skipper Evan Brown with senior Beth Hoover and junior Cameron Bell as crews. In B division the promising sophomore Peter Stemler got his feet wet against the best competition in the country with a veteran crew in junior Kelly McKenna.
Both Saturday and Sunday saw light air conditions, common for this time of year on the Long Island Sound, home waters of Yale's team. The Stanford sailors rarely see such light and choppy conditions at home and much of the weekend was spent getting their 420 boat-speed and handling up to par again after the summer months away from the water.
Preseason begins Wednesday, September 19 when the Cardinal will welcome a strong freshman class along with a number of veteran skippers and crews to help them along as quickly as possible. The next competition for the Cardinal sailors is the Bryson Women's Regatta, hosted by Stanford September 29-30.
