Stanford, CA - The fifth-ranked women's gymnastics team will host their only multi-team meet of the season Friday, February 9, at 7:30 pm in Maples Pavilion. The Card look to keep their undefeated Pac-10 streak alive in a rematch with the 11th-ranked Beavers, who edged Stanford out of NCAA Nationals the last time the two teams met on the Farm. Oregon State has a strong group of returning letter winners that include last year's Pac 10 Freshman of the Year Jamie Lanz and the 2006 Pac 10 Vault and Floor Exercise Champion, Tasha Smith.
Iowa State had a historic 2006 season that finished with their first berth in the elite Super Six team finale at NCAA Nationals and come to this meet with a #15 national ranking as well as a brand new coaching staff. Head Coach Wayne Wright's San Jose State Spartans are returning to Maples after a record-setting performance of their own at the NCAA Regional meet that Stanford hosted last season and are currently ranked #39 in the country.
This event has special significance as Head Coach Kristen Smyth has worked to develop a breast cancer awareness tie to the competition. Anyone wearing pink apparel will be admitted to the event for free and the team is selling pink ribbons with raffle tickets for $3 that bring a chance to win a pair of airline tickets and other prizes. All proceeds from the event will go to support the Community Breast Health Project.
The latest GymInfo rankings have each of OSU's lineup ranked in the Top 25, including the beam team which is ranked seventh nationally, but three of Stanford's lineups are ranked in the top six nationally. The Beavers are ranked 12th on the floor exercise, 18th on the uneven bars and are tied for 25th on the vault. The Cardinal are ranked 2nd on bars, 3rd on beam, and 6th on floor.
