Stanford, Calif. - Stanford Athletic Director Ted Leland announced today that the renovation of Maples Pavilion is ahead of schedule and the Cardinal men's and women's basketball teams will be able to compete on their home court beginning in December. "I am pleased to announce that the Maples Pavilion construction has gone much quicker than anticipated, and we will be occupying the building on December 1," noted Leland. "We are very excited about all of the new amenities that have been added to the facility for our fans and student-athletes and are eager to open it up to the public." The teams expected to return to Maples at the start of the Pac-10 season in January 2005, but with the renovations moving ahead of schedule, Maples Pavilion will be ready for occupation on Dec. 1. The first home game scheduled for Maples will be on Dec. 10, as the women's basketball team faces off against Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Men's basketball anticipated playing four games at the Levy Center on the Santa Clara University campus, but the early completion will mean that only one game will be held off-campus. The men's squad opens the season with an exhibition game against Concordia on Nov. 13 in Santa Clara. The remainder of the men's home schedule will be played at Maples Pavilion, with the games against UC Davis (Dec. 18), Dartmouth (Dec. 22) and Montana (Dec. 23) relocating back to Stanford. Women's basketball will now play just four games at the Levy Center, two exhibition contests and two regular season games. The women will open the season in Santa Clara with exhibition games against Northwest Sports (Nov. 11) and Love & Basketball (Nov. 14) before taking on Pacific (Nov. 21) and Texas Tech (Nov. 28). The Cardinal's next home game on Dec. 10 against Pepperdine will mark Stanford's permanent return to Maples. Women's volleyball has moved their home matches for the 2004 season to Burnham Pavilion, which is located in the Ford Center, just across the street from Maples Pavilion. The earlier completion date will not affect any of the volleyball matches this season.
