San Francisco, Calif. - The spring season came to an end Wednesday with the conclusion of the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy Nationals hosted by Stanford University and St. Francis Yacht Club. All involved agreed the event went off without a hitch. The Cardinal sailors finished the event in 15th out of the 18 teams, and finished the season as the ninth overall team in the country based on Fowle Trophy Points awarded at each of the six national championships held throughout the year.

The ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship was made up of the top 18 teams as selected from two semifinal championships. This format, in its second year, leads to an incredibly deep field of teams competing for the penultimate national championship on the schedule. Stanford put forth a true team effort with Cole Hatton '11, Kelly McKenna '09, Nick Dugdale '12, and Hayley Tobin '11 in A division and Taylor Grimes '09, Carolyn Prioleau '12, Justin Doane '12, and Oliver Riihiluoma '12 in B division. Slow to get started, the team showed marked improvement over the course of the long, three-day, thirty-six race regatta. On the final day, single digit scores were much more common than the double-digit scores of the first day and a half of sailing. The greatest stumbling block early, and the most improved aspect of the team's sailing, was the level of comfort on the competitive starting line.

Looking towards next fall, head coach John Vandemoer intends to put forward as many teams as possible to compete in deep East Coast fleet race regattas. With more repetitions on the crowded starting line we can expect at next year's event, a full schedule will prove invaluable for the team.

Coed Nationals were the fifth of six national championships the Cardinal sailors competed in this year. Sending sailors to both men's and women's singlehanded championships in the fall and qualifying for all three spring national championships (Women's and Team Racing on top of Coed) put the team in a position to score high in the Fowle Trophy tally. The Fowle Trophy encompasses all the nationals and is truly a team award. Finishing up ninth in the country is a solid finish to the year for the young Cardinal team.

Graduating three key players in Taylor Grimes, Kelly McKenna, and Catherine Cu, Stanford sailing is excited to welcome in a promising class of recruited student-athletes. Watch for the Cardinal to be back on the water in September.
