Stanford synchronized swimming will open their home season this weekend at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal will play host to Incarnate Word for the three day meet that begins Friday, Feb. 6.
Friday evening the teams will compete in the figures/elements competition at 7 p.m. Saturday will be the main action as the routine competitions will take place at 4 p.m. The Cardinal will unveil their new routines for 2009 for the first time in front of their home fans. The meet will conclude on Sunday with figures and elements at 9:30 a.m.
The Cardinal is coming off their season-opening win over Florida on Jan. 17-18. Stanford swept the top spot in every event on their way to victory. The team of Erin Bell, Allison Coates, Taylor Durand, Morgan Fuller and Koko Urata won the team event, while Bell, Durand and Fuller took the trio event. In the duet it was Bell and Durand again coming through for the Cardinal, while Urata captured the solo competition.
The same weekend as the victory over Florida, six Stanford synchronized swimmers competed in phase one of the National Team Trials. Each of Alex Bollaidlaw, Debbie Chen, Maria Koroleva, Michelle Moore, Olivia Morgan and Corinne Smith advanced to the next round of qualifying. Phase two of the qualifying takes place at Stanford on May 3, the day after the completion of U.S. Nationals.
The U.S. National meet will also be hosted by Stanford at the Avery Aquatic Center. It will take place from April 30th to May 2nd. Last season, the Cardinal became the first collegiate team share for the U.S. title, a spot usually reserved for club teams.
