STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford head football coach Jim Harbaugh has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the inaugural Joe V. Paterno Award, which honors a head coach for outstanding achievement on the field, his program's success in the classroom and community involvement.
The award is presented by the Maxwell Football Club in honor of the legendary Penn State football coach.
The three finalists for the award will be announced on Monday, December 6 with the winner being named on December 18.
Harbaugh has guided the Cardinal to an 8-1 record this season, Stanford's best start since the 1970 season. Stanford is ranked seventh in this week's Associated Press Top 25 poll, the program's highest ranking since the 1970 season.
Stanford players continue to excel in the classroom, as well as on the field. In the last Academic Progress Rate standards released by the NCAA, Stanford received an APR mark of 976, which was the highest rating among Pac-10 schools and one that ranked eighth nationally among FBS schools.
Three Stanford players - Chase Beeler, Owen Marecic and Andrew Phillips - earned ESPN All-Academic District VIII honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and are under consideration for national honors, as well.
Marecic is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which honors the top scholar-athlete in college football.
Stanford Football has also been active in the Bay Area community under Harbaugh's leadership, making regular trips to schools and hospitals. In addition, Coach Harbaugh has volunteered a week of his time each of the last two years assisting impoverished villagers in Piura, Peru through a grass roots program headed up by Reverend Joseph Uhlen.
