STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford, 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Pac-10 Conference and winners of its last four games, is ranked sixth in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings which were released on Sunday.
The Cardinal also climbed three spots to No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25 after its 42-17 victory over 13th-ranked Arizona, marking Stanford's highest ranking since 1970, when the Rose Bowl-bound Indians were ranked sixth heading into its Nov. 14 game at Air Force. Stanford holds down the ninth spot in the USA Today Coaches poll.
Oregon and Auburn are ranked first and second, respectively, in all three major polls. TCU, Boise State and LSU round out the BCS's top five, followed by Stanford in the sixth spot.
At 8-1, Stanford is off to its best start since 1970, when John Ralston's team also broke out of the gates with an 8-1 mark on its way to the Pacific-8 Conference title.
Stanford will travel to Arizona State next Saturday for a date with the Sun Devils in Tempe. Kick off is set for 4:30 p.m. PT and the game will be televised by Fox Sports Arizona (Comcast 414 in the Bay Area).
