Honolulu, Hawaii - The Stanford Cardinal finished Friday's ICSA Gill North American Championship on a high note; with Ted Conrads and Amy Halvorsen winning the last race of the regatta. The three day event was full of ups and downs for the Cardinal sailors, who finished the regatta in 9th overall. Conrads and Halvo finished 8th in B Division. A-Division duo Dave Phillips and Kara Sweeney finished 8th in their division. St. Mary's College of Maryland won the regatta, Harvard was second and Hawaii finished third.

At the awards banquet, two surprises elated the Stanford sailors; First, Kara Sweeney was called to the stage as an ICSA/Ronstan Collegiate All-American Crew. She was one of 20 college sailors to earn this honor this year, and is Stanford's first All-American in four years (since Anika Leersen earned skipper honors in 1997). Sweeney's dedication to both the sucessful Stanford Women's and Coed Team earned her a string of crewing victories that put her in the top 20 college crews this year.

The second surprise was Stanford earning 7th place in the 2001-2002 Fowle Trophy. The Fowle is awarded to the best all-around team, as judged by performance at all North American Championships. Stanford attended four of the six annual North American Championships this year; Dave Kenny earned 8th at Men's Singlehandeds, Ashley Frush earned 13th at Women's Singlehandeds, the Women's Dinghy team earned 11th at last weeks Women's Dinghies and the Coeds earned 9th at the Coed Dinghies. The Fowle was won by Harvard this year. More details are available at
